Matt Redman
- Facedown
I must admit, I'm often not the
greatest fan of Matt Redman's albums. Now don't get me wrong,
Matt's written some incredible songs and there are 'diamonds'
to be found on every one of his CDs, but I've always struggled
a little with his albums. 'Why?' I hear you cry.Well simply
because I never really felt there was much development, particularly
musically. |

Every CD was similar
to the last, fit the Soul Survivor model and was often indistinguishable
from any other Survivor CD.
But now here is 'Facedown'. Recorded in the States, the music
is edgy, the songs are still catchy, but for me, there's more depth
to them than in previous albums. 'Praise Awaits You' sets the scene
well, marking this album out as an act of worship as much a music
recording. Redman puts worship in it's rightful context as he sings
'worship starts with seeing you'. Spontaneous worship continues
to mix with tight and energetic music, but for me, nothing is as
powerful as the understated presence of the title track, 'Facedown'.
This is an album with a different feel to the continuous worship
releases here in the UK. The music is effective, the players excellent,
the arrangements imaginative. More than anything however, the songs
speak to the heart and call us to respond, and surely that should
be the aim of any worship album.
